Paint: Colors, Tips, and More

Trends may come and go, but a good neutral will always stick around. We’re especially loving the warmer versions coming back to the forefront. They just feel so cozy and happy to be in. For many of our interior design and paint consultation clients in the Charlotte, NC and Lake Norman areas, the right paint color is one of the easiest ways to refresh a space without a full renovation. Find some of our favorite neutrals from Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore in the graphic below, plus a few practical tips to help you choose the right paint for your home.

Choosing Neutral Paint Colors for Charlotte, NC Homes

As a general rule, it’s not a good idea to mix one brand’s color into another brand’s paint. Don’t try to mix a Benjamin Moore color into paint from Lowe’s. Chances are, you’re going to be disappointed. The brands all have slightly different base formulas so that perfect white, just might turn out cream. Or that black, could have a tint of blue. It’s always better to choose your color from the brand you intend to purchase.

Which finish should you pick? There’s a little bit of personal choice a little bit of professional advice in this one.

Flat paint hides mistakes- if your drywall isn’t perfect or you’re a novice painter- this might be your go to. It’s common to use on ceilings as well since it doesn’t have any reflective sheen. It’s more difficult to clean, but easy to touch up.

Eggshell/Satin are the most commonly used wall finishes. The slight sheen makes it washable, but you’ll see touch ups much more than if you use a flat paint.

Semi-gloss is perfect for doors and trim. Easy to clean, but the sheen is a bit much for most wall applications.

Paint Color FAQs for Charlotte, NC Homeowners

How do I choose the right white or neutral for my home?

Start by looking at your fixed elements- flooring, countertops, and cabinetry- and your natural light. In our Charlotte paint consultations, we narrow down a few options that complement those finishes, then test large samples on the wall at different times of day before making a final decision.

Do paint colors look different in person than on a screen?

Yes. Colors can shift dramatically based on lighting and surrounding finishes. That’s why we always recommend testing real paint swatches on your walls instead of relying only on online images or tiny chips.

Can you help me choose paint colors virtually?

Absolutely. We offer virtual paint consultations for clients in Charlotte, Lake Norman, and beyond. You can share photos and videos of your space, and we’ll recommend specific colors and finishes tailored to your home.
